When you focus on the economy and the competition, you are focusing on the wrong things. (You cannot do any thing about either of them anyway.)
Focus your efforts instead on the things you can control and affect --- your customers and your employees. Customers and employees do things for their own reasons, not yours. Do you know why people give you their business? Do you understand why your best customers buy from you and why your best employees continue to work for you? Is it for your great prices, location, or service that your customers buy from you. Is it for the paycheck, training, job security, great management, or for the flexible hours or some combination that your employees stay on board? Don’t be against the competition or the economy; be for your customers and for your employees (and let your competition worry about you and the economy).
