One of my clients wrote me a note last week about the fact that she ran an ad telling applicants how to apply and what information they needed to submit with their resume...
HOW TO APPLY: No phone calls and no unscheduled, in-person office visits, please. We are doing our best to keep up with business!
- Email us your resume.
- Also, write us exactly what made you feel that this position is right for you and what is frustrating you in your present position.
- Please state your minimum compensation requirement.
Not one applicant provided any comment about compensation at all.
How do you feel about the situation and what would you tell her? Here is my response:
What you see during the hiring process is the best you will most likely ever see. If they don't follow directions now, what makes you think they will follow them later?
With today’s unemployment rate, I am surprised that no one followed directions.
If they did not state their salary requirement, at least they should say something about their expectations being based on job duties, that they need to know more about the job, or are flexible.
It could be they are sending almost the same thing to every employer and not taking the time to read or look up your firm on the Internet. It is not like you do not have a presence on the web that they could not do their homework.
Any person who does that much homework looking for a job will most likely do at least part of it when they have a job.
If you want to get tough, you could say: "If you cannot respond to all three requirements specified in this ad, do not take time to apply. You will not be considered for employment."
